Foraminal Narrowing

A pair of nerve roots runs at every level of the spine from the spinal column through tiny openings called foramina. If the foramina become narrowed and a nerve root is irritated or compressed, it can cause pain that radiates along the length of the nerve, as well as tingling, numbness or weakness within the muscle group associated with the affected nerve.

Aging and the gradual deterioration of the components of the spine contribute to foraminal narrowing. Conditions that can contribute to narrowing include bulging or herniated disc, bone spurs, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis and injury.

Lumin PainCARE specialists will begin treatment with conservative approaches including pain injections, targeted exercise and pain medications. If these do not provide the desired results, minimally invasive surgery may be a recommended course of treatment.
