Slipped Disc/Herniated Disc

Slipped Disc is a common term for ruptured, bulging or herniated disc. In reality, the disc has not shifted or changed position in any way. Rather, the structure of the disc has been compromised by aging, disease or injury. The disc wall has torn slightly and the thick gel-like substance in the outer disc wall has leaked into the spinal canal. If the disc material applies pressure to a nearby nerve root or the spinal cord, debilitating pain can result. Depending on the location of the damaged disc, tingling, numbness, radiating pain and muscle weakness can occur.

Most patients find that conservative approaches including pain and anti-inflammatory medications, targeted exercise, physical therapy and rest are effective treatments for slipped disc. If these approaches don’t provide the desired pain relief results, Lumin PainCARE specialists may recommend minimally invasive surgery.
