Spondylitis is a form of arthritis that causes inflammation in the joints of the spine. This inflammation can cause chronic pain, stiffness, loss of mobility and flexibility and, in some cases, fusion of the spinal bones.
Several forms of arthritis can affect the spine including:
- Ankylosing spondylitis characterized by stiffness, soreness and pain in the hips, back or extremities with its hallmark being fusion of bone.
- Rheumatoid arthritis is a common autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues, in this case the thin layer that lines joints and lubricates them. Eventually rheumatoid arthritis can lead to chronic inflammation and further damage.
- Osteoarthritis is inflammation caused by the breakdown of cartilage due to wear and tear and aging. It is most common in weight-bearing joints.
Relatively few treatment options are available other than pain relievers and some special medications aimed at slowing down the progress of the disease. Lumin PainCARE specialists may recommend a minimally invasive surgical procedure designed to deaden the nerve that affects the arthritic facet joint.
